Nature Guide Training @ SBWR

It was a good Saturday morning of September 5th, we met at Kranji MRT by 9 AM. This is due Kranji Express schedule and 925 does not stop near SBWR except on Sundays.

We visited the information centre before a briefing session by July. We can always read the information in the centre to recall facts to share with the participants about SBWR.

Nature Guiding Tips Shared by July

- Inform participants of the safety rules.

- If they are not feeling well, they have to inform their guide.

- Participants are advised to drink lots of water during hot weather.

-They have to keep their voices low too, as the animals in SBWR are not used to having people around them. These animals would hide quickly when they sense something unfamiliar around them

- Participants must not touch anything unless their guide mentions that it is safe to touch the animal or plant.

We stopped at several spots along the Mangrove Boardwalk as July shared his knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem.

Excoecaria agallocha

One of the highlights of the day was a deciduous mangrove tree, Buta Buta, Blind your eyes. Its latex can blind your eyes if your eyes are in contact with it. The tree is used to make firewood, in making charcoal and carpentry work.

We found lots of tree climbing crabs of all sizes and common nerites as it was high tide.

We found a spider camouflaged in one of the hut. Can you spot the spider?

After we made a round of the Mangrove Boardwalk, we walked towards the Main Hide. We found interesting flora and fauna along the way.

A beautiful coastal shrub, Memecylong caerulum, with blooming flowers of less than 2 cm in diameter. Its ripened fruits contains purple coloured juice.

As we walked towards the bridge, we noticed a group of people took pictures of a green crested lizard. Can you spot the lizard in the picture?

We were treated to a spectacular view of the migratory birds such as Whimbrels and Little Egrets from the Main Hide. We were lucky to see flocks of different migratory birds as they stopped for rest before continuing their long journey. We were also fortunate to learn from a professional guide as he explained about the birds to his participants.

After spending some time at the Main Hide, we went home through Kranji Nature Trail.

Nature Guide Training @ Chek Jawa Wetlands

It was fair weather on 29th August. We were excited to embark on a new journey, being a nature guide. We took a bumboat ride to Pulau Ubin, then hopped on a van to Chek Jawa Wetlands.

Upon reaching Chek Jawa, we headed towards the visitors center to have a short briefing before going to house No. 1. Since we were early, we had a short rest at House No.1 and further briefing was given by July.

Information gathered at House No. 1

Nature guide training will be conducted on the last Saturday of the month.
We need to commit a minimum of 6 months in a year for nature guiding.
Training is such trainee guides will follow, observe and assist the guides during guided walks. After several sessions (about 3), trainee guides will be eased into guiding by being a co-guide during guided walks.
For each training session, trainee guides need to familiarize themselves with at least 3 flora/fauna found at Chek Jawa.
The purpose of this trip is to observe how Naked Hermit Crab (NHC) volunteers conduct nature guided walks along Chek Jawa boardwalk.
We were also informed to observe interactions between participants and nature guide.We are encouraged to be brave and interactive to share knowledge with a lot of people in a group.
For a pleasant guided walk experience, it is best to keep groups small and manageable. A group size of about 10 or less will be best.

After briefing, we went to visitors center to meet NHC volunteers. We were grouped into two groups, the photography group led by Ms Ria Tan (NHC), and a big group led by Ms Chay Hoon and Kok Sheng (NHC).

Nature guide guidelines shared by NHC volunteers

Assume that participants do not know the flora and fauna surrounds Chek Jawa. Therefore, we need to scaffold this knowledge for the participants.
Start the guide with safety rules (similar to SBWR training - see the above event coverage.
If we see anything that's interesting, we can highlight it and show to them.
We are to note 3 observations made for the day.

Some of the interesting things noted was,
The Bird post
Bird houses were setup along the coast for migratory birds to raise their young. We will know if the bird house is used if half of the entrance to the bird house is closed.

We can also share with participants that Pulau Sekudu is just across Chek Jawa. We can only see its top part due to high tide.

Kok Sheng shared his knowledge of the various types of habitat around Chek Jawa. At this stop, he shared about the vast inter - tidal area (in front of the boardwalk) which was covered by high tide.

We passed the rocky shore and was informed of how the rocks are shaped by the sea.

We stopped for a brief moment near the Sea Hibiscus flower and was lucky to see a blooming one. Chay Hoon shared with us that it will turned purple by evening. However, this depends on the weather for the day.

We searched for mud lobster crab which is a beautiful creature. We found out later that November (NHC), took a video of the mud lobster crab.

We saw lots of tiny crabs and they have electrifying colours. Kok Sheng excitedly looked out for a blue electrifying one. A point to note, these crabs are unlike eel, they do not have electricity in their bodies.

We passed the Jejawi Tower where we can see a vast area of Chek Jawa and birds.

After a few more stops, we made our way back to House no. 1 for a short rest and debrief before we head home.

After we bade our goodbyes, we waited for the van to come.....

We had a meaningful learning journey and went home.

Endangered Animal Parade at NIE!

Event Coverage:

Today, 22 Aug 2008, setting off together with the runners from the NIE Director's Fun Run were the 'animals' from the first Endangered Animal Parade held in NIE.

The Endangered Animal Parade is an event where participants would either dress up as an endangered animal or showcase an endangered animal through the usage of props. The key thing was that the costumes and props must be made from recycled material.

Here are some of the participants getting ready for the flag off of the parade (picture below)
Participants came dressed as sea turtles, held props to showcase jellyfishes and sea snakes (picture below).
As this was a parade, people of all age joined us, including some toddlers (picture below).
Very soon, the parade got off in full swing and we started off by walking with the NIE campus buildings (pictures below).

This shows that you're never too old nor young to speak up for our endangered animals as they cannot speak our language (picture below).Here's a look at the shells of the sea turtles (picture below).We also took the chance to spread our messages around (picture below).Here's one of our messages of the day (picture below)."Turtles need jellyfish! Save our island habitats!"

Introduction of Endangered Animal Parade:
The Endangered Animal Parade, inspired by the Singapore Wildlife Stampede (held on 2 Nov 2007 at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, http://wildlifeparade.wordpress.com/), aims to educate youths on the endangered animal species found in Singapore and other parts of the world. Through this event, we hope to heighten the awareness of the dangers which our environment is facing and hence promote a sense of stewardship towards nature in our youths.

Held alongside with the NIE Director’s Fun Run 2008, this event is similar to Chingay Parade held annually during the Chinese New Year season, participating groups will make a parade around the NIE campus dressed in costumes of endangered animals. Thus we urge schools, environment clubs, animal welfare clubs and YOU to join us and showcase your creativity in this parade.

Getting Wild about Singapore's Shores

On the 22 Feb 2008, the NIE community was treated to a splendor of pictures by Ria, who kindly agreed to give a short 20 minute talk on Singapore shores.

Before the talk started, early birds were treated to the colours of Singapore's shores (a whole range of pictures on the marne flora and fauna found on our shores).
During the talk, Ria spoke about the many wonderful life we can find on our shores, here's her introducing our shores (picture below, do apologize for the blurry picture).
As Ria engaged the audience with many beautiful pictures and witty jokes, she also shared on how each individual can play a part. The formula is simple, simply, Explore, Express and Act.
Such short words i have written on Ria's talk doesn't really do justice on the success of it. But given the applause she received, i believe everyone felt that it was a great talk!

Thank you, Ria, for giving this talk and Dr Vilma who invited Ria.

Blogging Workshop for Kids

Event Coverage:

The sound of music will greet you whenever you walk around in NIE on the usual Friday nights, however on this Friday night (25th Jan). NIE was buzzing with another activity also. Blogging!

This was the day that the kids who went to Changi Beach in Wednesday, to not only to sit in a lesson but also learn and put into practice on how to start a blog and how to blog. Oh, and their parents were also present to learn together with their kids!

Do you recognize the little girl who is in pink and on the right hand side of the picture (picture below)?
She is the same girl who was on the first photo of the event coverage for the Changi Beach trip! It was a pity i forgotten to get her name but i do know she is only 3 and she is here to learn blogging. Wow!

Here's Ria who asked the question (as stated above) during the introduction stage of the workshop (picture below).
The instructor of the night was November. Here she is giving everyone a brief outline on why we should blog for nature. Interested to find out the answer? Read the words found on the picture below.
Only after giving out instructions for every kid to start creating a blog truly did the workshop moved into action (picture below). Lucky, we had helpers answering questions and assisting when the participants faced difficulties.
At the workshop, we also had with us a crew from Channel 8 who are doing up a program about people who are working for the environment and one of them would be Joe Lai who is working hard on the PC in the picture below.
The crew also went about the room filming the kids in blogging action. And as the kids were really engrossed in their blogging, November did had to raise her voice at times to gather everyones attention (picture below).In about an hour, the kids learned and created their own blog and their first blog posting. The next job for them was to use another 20 minutes to write up what ever they wish to write about for their experience on the trip to Changi Beach on Wednesday.

Kids hard and focused at work (pictures below)! Here's Christopher and his crew from Channel 8 hard at work also (picture below).And of course , I would like to thank the helpers for taking their precious Friday night time off to come to help for this workshop (picture below). Introducing our Shores to our kids

Today, a batch of kids (with their parents) were brought to one of the wonderful shores in Singapore, Changi Beach.

With Joesph Lai, a botanist, leading the group and members of the Naked Hermit Crabs (Ria and November) and NIE Green Club (July) helping out, they were introduced to the many interesting marine life found on our shores.

The kids were really enthusiastic and hawked-eyed as they found loads of things. Here's Jack holding a sea cucumber on his hand, while a sand star waits for its turn for its introduction (picture below).
Here's the sand star with a more close up view (picture below). Did you know they actually sallow their prey (which includes button shells) whole?Even the parents were interested in finding out more about the life on our shores, here is November telling them more about a hairy sea hare (picture below).
A closer look of the hairy sea hare which is seasonal (picture below).As this outing was also like a pre-event to the blogging workshop on our shores for kids, which will be held at NIE this Friday, there were lots of picture-taking and notes-taking too (picture below). The blogging workshop, an event held as part of a International Year of the Reef (IYOR) event aims to encourage kids to write about our shores and then publish their writings on blogs.

From BlockHeads to BlogHeads

Today (Friday) was the second round of workshops on blogging which was hosted by the NIE Green Club and conducted by the Naked Hermit Crabs.

"From BlockHeads to BlogHeads" is a workshop where BlockHeads (people who are not sure on how to blog) learn how to blog, therefore becoming BlogHeads (people who are blogging).

It was also like a mini gathering for people involved in nature, as participants from NSS (Butterfly group, Education group, Horseshoe Crab group), Cicada Tree Eco-place, Eart-h, Nature Trekker, Wildfilms, Blue Water Volunteers, SP environmental club and others attended this workshop.

The main objective of this workshop was to get every participants who were BlockHeads to set up a blog and at least post up one entry on it, and here's everyone busy at work (picture below).
Participation level was also very high, as every tutor was kept very busy with the many questions from their students (Thus only 3 photographs for this blog entry).
Under the guidance of the main tutor (November) and the other tutors, every student soon had a blog set up, posted several entries with photographs, and even did postings on a group blog, all using the blogger tool of the night, www.blogger.com.

Very soon, the workshop did have to end and every student was assigned with "homework", to maintain a blog for three months with at least two postings per month.

Hosted by the NIE Green Club and conducted by the Naked Hermit Crabs(NHC), "Sharing Nature with Web 2.0" was attended by volunteers from NHC, Semakau, Blue Water Volunteers, etc. and members from the NTU Earthlink and SP environmental club were also present.

As the title of the workshop suggested, this was a workshop to share on Web 2.0 tools.

Chek Jawa - Our Outdoor Classroom

Island wide rain this morning nearly made this event impossible.

But as the seconds went ticking by, the participants arriving one by one and the weather slowly turning for the better, it was the sign that "Chek Jawa - Our Outdoor Classroom" will go on as planned.

In collaboration with the Naked Hermit Crabs (NHC), this was one of the first trips in 2007 that the NIE green club had planned for NIE students for guided visits to one of the natural heritage sites of Singapore, Chek Jawa on Pulau Ubin

Here are some of the happy faces on the boat ride to Ubin as the dark clouds slowly went away. ( I do apologize for the blur photo, as this is the first time i'm using my new camera.)
Reaching Chek Jawa, everyone formed into their different groups, Swimming Crabs, Fiddler Crabs, Thunder Crabs and Vinegar Crabs. Each group was then introduced to their guide from the NHC and very soon, the guide walk began.

The picture below shows a group lead by Ron, the chef NHC.
After some introduction of the plants found along the trail of the trail, the groups soon reached the boardwalk.

Here's Pei Hao (an assistant guide AKA NHC photographer of the day) telling the thunder and vinegar crabs more about the sea nutmeg tree, a once thought extinct shore plant, with the help of some photos.
And as soon Pei Hao completed his introduction of the sea nutmeg tree, he goes on to introduce everyone to the boardwalk at CJ.

"Look at the boardwalk. What do you think it's made of?"
"It's actually not made of wood, the material used to make it are concrete and fibre glass!"

Walking along the boardwalk, you will not miss the coastal forest of CJ, a place where the wild jungle fowl resides and a source of nutrients and minerals for the animals and plants in the waters.
And if you looked towards the Singapore main island, there is this small island, Pulau Sekudu AKA frog island. A legend on how Pulau Sekudu and Pulau Ubin was formed was shared by the guides to all the participants.
Here's Ron introducing one other ecosystem found at CJ, the coral rubble area."Look at that! Can you spot it? There's lots of them around."Ron was pointing to a mudskipper, a fish which is able to breathe underwater and above water, and skip too!As everyone continued looked into the waters trying to spot something, two flower crabs were soon discovered swimming in the water looking for food.

Reaching the mangrove forests, the first plant that was highlighted was the atap plam.
This is the palm where we get the atap chee. Do you know that atap chee is actually the seed from its fruit? Yes, it is!Walking into the mangrove forest, everyone was soon introduced to the aerial roots and different root structures of the mangrove trees.

The picture below shows one of them, pencil roots from the Api-api (Avicennia).
Found soon along the side of the boardway was two vinegar crabs, not the participants , but the real thing. =PThey are called vinegar crabs because of the Teochew. They like to eat these crabs pickled in black sauce with vinegar.

As the sun rose higher into the sky, we climbed the Jejawi Tower, a tower named after the Jejawi tree, a fig.And on top of the tower, everyone was taking photos of this long tailed Macaque as it ate the fruits of the Jejawi tree.Lesson of the day:
It is clear that these monkeys are able to find food themselves.
So please do not feed the monkeys.

Being on the tower also gave everyone a magnificent view of CJ from 20 meters high.And with everyone in high spirits, i went around taking group shots of all the NIE participants plus their guides.

Here's the swimming crabs led by Chay Hoon and Alyce.The Fiddler Crabs led by Marcus and Sijie.The Thunder and Vinegar Crabs led by Ron, Pei Hao and myself.Descending from the tower, everyone was then brought to the House No. 1.A must see thing at House No. 1 would be this rescue tank. In this tank, you can find animals which were found to be either injured or sick around CJ. They will be kept under observation and care and once they are healthy again, they will be released back to the wild.One more interesting thing about this tank is that the animals in it has got names!Finally, after a short debrief and signing of guest sheets for the NHC, the guide walk was brought to an end under a sky that looked very different compared to the morning, a blue sky.

Frequently Asked Questions aka FAQs

Who is organising this walk?
The NIE Green Club and the Naked Hermit Crabs (NHC).

Why is the group size limited?
Firstly, there aren't many volunteers from NHC right now to help conduct the walks.
Secondly, it's much more enjoyable for you if the group is small. You don't have to jostle to see or hear the guide, or the wildlife being discussed.
Most importantly, we would like to minimise impact upon the natural environment. If we were unable to accommodate you this time around, hopefully you could join us in our future trips? If you enjoy our walks and demand is great, we can continue to hold more of these walks.

Why are the walks charged?
Your contribution of $4 per person will help partially cover the costs of training and developing the walks. The bulk of costs are currently funded through personal contributions by the Naked Hermit Crabs. The Crabs will of course gratefully accept any additional donations to this cause! Thank you!

Why do we need to prepare $8 as transportation cost?
The first $4 is for the boat ride to and fro Pulau Ubin.
The second $4 will be for the van ride to and fro Chek Jawa.

Where exactly is the meeting point?
Changi Ferry Terminal, the ferry terminal which has boat rides to Pulau Ubin, the one located very near Changi Village.

What to prepare for the walk besides a camera?
(1). A pair of comfortable walking shoes would be best.
(2). Wear light-breathable clothing.
(3). Bring a hat in case of hot weather.
(4). Bring drinking water and a light snack.
(5). Encountering of some insects along the walk would be possible. Therefore, some insect repellent might come in handy.
(6). Bring a poncho in case of wet weather. Umbrellas are discouraged, as it would be a possible lightning conductor. But if there is heavy rain or lightning (which can happen without rain), the walk will be stopped or aborted.

Event Name: Chek Jawa - Our Outdoor Classroom

“The Beauty of Chek Jawa is that several different ecosystems can be seen in one small area. These ecosystems and the plants and animals found there are no longer common in Singapore.” (Chek Jawa Guidebook, Ria Tan and Alan Yeo, 2003)

In collaboration with the Naked Hermit Crabs (NHC), the NIE Green Club is organising an exclusive guided walk at the recently opened Chek Jawa boardwalk for NIE Trainee Teachers, this September.

Come and experience what it’s like to be in an outdoor classroom like Tanjung Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin.

Date: Saturday, 8^th September 2007
Time: 8:30 am to 12 pm
Cost per person: $4 (For guided walk)
Prepare: $8 (Transportation costs per person)
